MCDONALDIZATION

OF THE IT INDUSTRY

Without Sacrificing 'The Human Touch of Creativity'

The McDonaldization of Society is a book authored by sociologist George Ritzer and it talks about how different cultures, industries and the society at large are being impacted by the revolution brought forth in the Fast Food Industry by McDonald's Speedy Service System. No matter how hard we try to ignore its indelible impact on our society, we can't help but appreciate the advantages of this innovation in the form of Availability & Affordability of Goods and Services, Quality, Regulation & Cultural diffusion.

While the rapidly evolving IT landscape has been an enabler of change and process efficiency in a multitude of industries, the industry itself is still a far cry away from solving the problems stemming from the lack of predictability of output.

Leveraging efficiency inducing tools to drastically minimize the time and dime required to execute any task in the software/application development and release lifecycle that doesn't require any creative input is the first step. It will help us to ensure that we are able to make IT more affordable for the masses without sacrificing an iota of quality - rather improving it by a Factor of 10. After all, a great idea can come from anyone and anywhere. However, there is an important caveat that we'd need to bear in mind.

The caveat is, that it is equally important to ensure that we are able to retain 'The Human Touch of Creativity' in the output while passing on all the advantages of this approach to the customer.
